“Oh great, a crazy person”. I thought to myself when a human dynamo of energy and enthusiasm came into the workshop with a guitar in pieces, asking me to put it back together. I quickly realised that my crazy dynamo lady was in fact an extremely talented and adorable artist called Shelly, who runs an art project called The Acrylic House. You can book a session to learn how to pour acrylic paint and create amazing art pieces like the ones below.

The work is amazing, have a look at the portfolio, and maybe book a session. I certainly will be. As you’ll be able to see from the range of work, Shelly not only works in 2D, but has explored swirly acrylic pours in 3D as well. Tables, vases, baubles, busts and even a deer head.

Shelly has a connection with The Spilt Milk Band, an outrageously talented group who can sing in three part harmony with a folk-indie-rock style arrangement of guitar, bass and drums. So the guitar she brought in was a surprise she was making for the guys, the prototype Acrylic House guitar, and as with all prototypes there were many problems on the way to making it exist. After a handful of weeks and consultations Shelly fine tuned a set of techniques to make an acrylic pour work on a 3D guitar surface, and protect it against the kind of wear and tear a guitar takes.

The final piece is one-of-a-kind, and between us we will be aiming to make these for under £500. Shelly will do the clever art stuff and we will source the instruments, assemble and set them up. If you’ve ever looked into buying a hand painted unique swirl finish guitar you’ll know this is about 1/4 of the price. There will be a small batch of various styles in the first run later this year (2023), painted in unique styles from whatever mood Shelly’s clever art brain is in at the time. You can also get in touch with custom orders for guitar models and paint ideas, or even have a guitar of your own refinished. I’m a sucker for copper and green, so I’ll be having that acrylic swirl on a Firebird sometime soon. Or maybe the orange and red dragon from the gallery of work above? Argh I can’t decide!
Hand painted swirl budget guitars are now a thing.
